What Would Jesus Do?

       Jesus tells us how we are expected to live.  The beatitudes (Mt 5:1-12) and the rest of the Sermon on the Mount prescribe the lifestyle of a Christian disciple.  "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock." (Mt 7:21)  Jesus sometimes describes a disciple's life in terms of STEWARDSHIP.  A Steward is one to whom the owner of a household turns over the responsibility of caring for the property, managing affairs, making resources yield as much as possible and sharing the resources with others.  The position involves trust and accountability (Mt. 25:14-30).

   All of the temporal and spiritual goods we have been blest with are created by God and come from Him.  Everything we have, spiritual gifts like faith, hope and love, talents of body and brain, cherished relationships with family and friends, material goods, the achievements of human genius and skill, the world itself -- all of these come from God.  Each of us has received a unique mix of talents, opportunities, challenges, weaknesses and strengths, potential modes of service and response on which the master expects a return.  He will judge us on what we have done with what we have been given and will one day require an accounting of how we have used our particular portion of His gifts and talents.

   To be a Christian disciple is a rewarding way of life, a way of companionship with Jesus; and the practice of STEWARDSHIP as a part of it, is itself, a source of deep joy.  Those who live this way are happy people who have found the meaning and purpose of living.

   Let us pray, "Lord, what would you have me to do?"
